France is a safe country but asylum seekers cannot be returned there or to any other EU country because there was no provision made in the "Brexit agreement." Act in haste. Repent at leisure but don't treat asylum seekers as your scapegoat. They are people who deserve our respect and compassion. It is not a crime under international law to seek asylum.
