Many people’s idea of sheltered housing is a a self contained complex of bungalows or flats with a “warden” who lives on site. This person would visit daily, or most days to check on the welfare of residents, and provide assistance with any day to day problems of a non complex nature.

There was a time when these wardens would also collect emergency prescriptions and do a small shop for a resident who was feeling unwell that day. In many cases they were on first name terms with the family members of their residents, which provided a feeling of security and wellbeing.

Alas Central Government cuts to local authorities put paid to this, leaving the term “sheltered accommodation” to be a misnomer.

This article centres on North Northamptonshire, but I can assure you that there has been no real public sector sheltered housing in Northamptonshire since 2010.
