Local Tories put party before country as usual.

First rule of the Conservatives is to do what is necessary to stay in power.

"First rule of the Conservatives is to do what is necessary to stay in power."

In fairness, you could say exactly the same of Labour - what do you think Alastair Campbell was doing for all that time during the Blair years?

What a shower they are, our honourable members ... but I'm willing to bet they'll all get in again when the obviously-needed next election takes place. What is wrong withh the voters in Northamptonshire?

You have the genesis of a point here. For example, most reasonable-thinking Conservatives, even, would acknowledge that if Labour (or the Liberals, come to that) ran the Conservatives a bit closer, electorally speaking, then governance of the county would be conducted in a better, perhaps more consensual, way.

That said, I see no evidence of the opposition parties offering a coherent alternative vision at any level. Here in Northants, we have been beset with candidates who have nothing to say beyond reactive micro-rhetoric, and some, even, who barely campaign at all. There is, as a result, nothing for the electorate to engage with. This is no way way to win an election, no way even to come close to winning!
