Encouraging the county’s EU citizens to vote
With a sizeable population of EU citizens in Northamptonshire, a campaign group has been trying to mobilise the vote
There are approximately 70,000 EU citizens in Northamptonshire and it is estimated that only half will have registered to vote.1
Corby has one of the highest population percentages of EU citizens anywhere in the country, with just under 30 per cent of its 72,000 residents hailing from European countries.
Despite leaving the EU at the end of last year, its citizens still maintain the right to take part in next month’s local elections, although whether this may be the last time they can do so is uncertain, as agreements have not been reached between the UK and other European nations.
However with only half of Corby’s EU residents registered to vote, it means that a sizeable chunk of the town’s community may not be heading to the polling station on May 6th.
