Oundle has been a hotbed of political activity recently as all the main parties prepare for next week’s North Northamptonshire Council by-election.

Against a backdrop of chaos in Westminster and the resignation of the former ward councillor Conservative Annabel de Capell Brooke - who moved to Norfolk and was claiming thousands in expenses despite attending just four of 19 meetings - there’s a feeling among local party activists that anybody could win the seat.

With that in mind, NN Journal hosted an online hustings to give residents the opportunity to put their questions to each candidate.

Unfortunately the Conservatives did not accept our invitation to the event but all the other candidates had plenty to say on the issues people raised.

Topics covered included the importance of having a local councillor who really understands and cares about the area, the future of Fletton Fields, GP services, accountability and the candidate’s priorities for the town.

Watch the full video here:

The by-election takes place on Thursday February 17, the candidates are:

Charlie Best, Liberal Democrat

Ollie Curtis, Conservative

Harry James, Labour

Kate Jones, Greens

Clearly Conservative policy is to avoid the indefensible. I wonder how the candidate felt about being instructed by the 'leadership' not to attend and play the party game that is clearly undemocratic. Having said that, the ploy of saying nothing at all worked in May.
