Police investigate after University of Northampton suffers cyber attack

The IT system has been down since last Wednesday

Good morning,

Yesterday we broke the story of a cyber attack at the University of Northampton, which has put IT systems offline for the past week. The university confirmed the attack to staff and students after NN Journal published the news. Up until then they had been kept in the dark.

Here’s an update for members.

Northants police and the government’s national security centre have been called in after cyber criminals took down the IT systems of the University of Northampton.

Lessons have been cancelled, assignment deadlines postponed and emergency systems have had to be set up to pay for staff salaries after the attack took place last Wednesday.

The university is one of a number, including Queen University in Belfast and the University of Central Lancashire which have been targeted this month by hackers.

Police say they are working with a national cyber security team to track down the cyber criminals.
