Northamptonshire’s two unitary councils will decide next week whether to move ahead with devolution talks which could see the county join a collective with other neighbouring areas and the creation of a south Midlands mayor.
Since coming to power this summer, Starmer’s Labour government has made clear its plans to shift power from central government to local regions and published a white paper last month setting out a number of options, with areas choosing to have an elected mayor seemingly receiving more autonomy and better financial settlements.
