Everything stated in this article around general underfunding for universities, alongside the knock-on effects of Brexit and Covid, is true but the University of Northampton and its then VC, Nick Petford, created this problem by pursuing the vanity project of the new campus (a campus without lecture halls remember!).

The university has a huge loan it has to pay back over decades - but can no longer afford to put on courses for students.

So true Craig. Sure, Brexit and Covid haven't helped, but this is a catch-all defence of HE and simply doesn't detail the specifics of Northampton's circumstances and virtually all media are missing this point. You have to read the pure vanity document here - https://shorturl.at/ncXkg - to understand the full depths of their errors (that almost everyone else could forsee) in indebting the University and taxpayer by millions of pounds it could well find urgent use for now...

Probably a sign of the government’s priorities that this week’s budget made no mention of higher education although both schools and FE colleges were allocated small funding increases.

Arts and the humanities have been particular targets [no surprise of course]. Let us hope sense prevails and the money can be found to get all our universities back on track.
