Friday brief: Will any Afghan families by rehomed in the north of the county?

North Northamptonshire Council (NNC) says it is talking with government officials about helping Afghan families - but it remains unclear whether any will be rehomed in the area.

Up to 5,000 families who have been evacuated from the Taliban controlled nation will be rehomed in the country and given assistance to begin new lives.

West Northamptonshire Council will take in 140 families - who have already arrived in Northampton and are being accommodated in a hotel.

However no specifics have been made public about how NNC, which locally governs the north of the county, will help those in need. The Home Office said this week it had heard from a third of local authorities in the country and called on others to get in touch. It would not confirm whether NNC was one of the third of local authorities that had stepped forward.
