Do we need better regulations of HMOs in Northamptonshire?

Concerns over the condition of HMOs and the impact on communities persist

In 2018 there were an estimated 497,000 Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMOs) in England and Wales. These multi-let properties can be controversial with some arguing they lead to overcrowding and anti-social behaviour and others believing they are vital in tackling the housing crisis. Today we look at the issue in more detail and ask if these homes need to be better regulated.

What is a HMO?

As demand for private rental properties has surged in recent years, HMOs have often been seen as a cheaper alternative for students, migrant workers and increasingly young professionals. 

According to the housing and homeless charity Shelter a HMO can usually be defined as a property which has three or more unrelated people living in them as at least two separate households, and those people share basic amenities such as a kitchen or bathroom. 

Standards vary greatly. While some responsible landlords provide good quality shared homes, others allow people to live in cramped and poor conditions.
