Covid Indian variant reaches Northants

Six cases of the Indian variant of Covid have been identified in Northamptonshire. Public Health Northamptonshire says staff and students at a school in the county will now be tested as a precautionary measure. 

This week health secretary Matt Hancock said the government is worried about the rise in cases of the Indian variant and is watching it very carefully. 

Restrictions continue to be lifted with indoor hospitality reopening next week and people being allowed to meet indoors in groups of six or more from two households among the changes. 

Lucy Wightman, director of public health in Northamptonshire said:

“Public Health England notified us on Tuesday that it had identified six cases of an Indian variant in Northamptonshire which do not appear to be linked to international travel but are part of a wider national cluster. PHE has already been in touch with the individuals concerned and their contacts.
