Conservatives elect new leader of North Northamptonshire Council

Jason Smithers is the first ever leader of North Northamptonshire Council.
In a Zoom meeting attended by the 60 strong North Northants Conservative group tonight, the former Northamptonshire county county cabinet member and newly elected councillor for Oundle got the most votes to claim the top job.
He beat off competition from Kettering’s Mark Rowley and newcomer Wellingborough’s Matt Binley (son of former Northampton South MP Brian Binley).
He will be deputised by former leader of Wellingborough Council Martin Griffiths who won over Raunds’ Hellen Howells, new councillor King Lawal and Kettering’s Scott Edwards.
The ballots were secret and so it is not clear how well both men won their jobs. They will be formally voted in at a full council meeting later this month.
