My dad was a Labour councillor for the ward downhill from the Mounts which was probably similar and I remember canvassing with him among very poor households.

Castle ward has high levels of air pollution from busy roads such as the A508 (Horse Market) and from the aggregate depot opposite the bottom of Scarletwell Street. Don't expect any action from the Reform Party though. They are promising to “Stop the War on Drivers” by banning Clean Air Zones and 20 mph zones and scrapping the upcoming bans on petrol and diesel cars.

Essentially it's a matter of socialclass and inequality. Castle ward proably has the poorest people and thus the worst diets, more smoking and the toughest work regimes. Look at the work of the Marmot commission about all this. The public authorities will have a lot to do to reverse these trends. Good luck.
